Assignment 4: Perou

I find this video of famous photographer Perou very interesting as it misleads you when you first watch it. You think it some sort of advertisement, but actually it is about him treating anything he photographs as a delicate, very beautiful woman. if you listen to what he says and truly understand it, it will help you understand photography in a completely new, fresh way. He explains his own views of photography in extreme detail.

Assignment 3: Depth of Field

Depth of field is the area in a photo that isn't the point that the camera lens' single point but still appears sharp in the final image. Depth of field helps in images if you want your final image to look completely sharp not just one point of the photo. For example in this image obviously the most sharpest thing is the man and his swan, but the grass around him still seems sharp and vibrant making the whole image a whole lot better. Depth of field is very useful to use when photographing landscapes, to create an equally sharp and vibrant image.

For help when trying to use depth of field in images I used this site http://www.macworld.com/article/1150150/depthoffield.html

Assignment 3: Lighting

Lighting can be used in various different ways to create different levels of dramatic features. It can also bring out certain features and make them stand out more. For example in this photo the first thing you look at in this photo is the window, then the hand and then the face and the rest of the man. This is all because they are the lightest thing in this black and white photo. The rule of thirds is also applied to where you are directed to look at in this photo. It causes you to look at the face, glasses and hands.

for help using lighting in photography I used this website http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Light-in-Photography

The photographer is John Hedgecoe and the camera used is a simple film camera that is printed in black and white. A lot of Hedgecoes work is done in film and is also in black in white. His collections are from the 1950's, 60's and 70's, when he was the most well known for his work. His work recently has become a lot more popular. John uses lighting in his photos to his advantage, making the final image a lot more sharper and interesting to view and look at. He has taken a lot of photos of people.

Assignment 3: Focal Point

Focal point is the exact point that the photographer makes you look at by adding the maximum sharpness to the photo making it stand out.
On this photo the focal point is the girl and her dolls, quite obviously. Vee Speers has taken this photo with no background to truly maximise the effect the girl and her scary dolls has on you. The focal point has been made a lot sharper and clearer by almost separating her from her background. The rule of thirds is used here and as she is in the center of the image it is what you immediately look at. The girls contrast in colour beings attention to her figure and appearance.

For help when trying to take better photos with focal point I used http://digital-photography-school.com/using-focal-points-in-photography

The photographer is Vee Speers and this was taken recently with a dslr camera. She uses a white backdrop to make the image sharper and to make the girls body hair and the actual whole finished image.  A lot of Speers' work is like this, very plain and at the same time very detailed when you look closer. She uses a lot of simple colours such as black white and grey and then further detailed colours such as dark reds, browns and blues. In this image Speers has also matched the dolls with the other colours used such as the greys and the blacks.

Assignment 3: Composition

Composition is the arrangement that is placed in a photo. It is the way visual elements help a photo.
This photo particularly is a perfect example of composition, the hands being placed in the triangle shape form a natural frame that makes the face become the main thing you look out. The way the lighting has been placed also brings your attention straight away to the face as it is the brightest thing on the photograph. The lighting has also emphasized the places which the photographer obviously thinks are the most important to look at. The whole photo is one colour but the different shades and patterns really bring it together. This photo also uses the rule of thirds, the first and the third being pretty much identical, but the second being right in the centre meaning his face is the first thing you look at.

This website really helps with getting the correct composition, resulting in you taking better photos:

John Hedgecoe is the photographer and this photo was taken in film, so it was before digital cameras were available. This shot is a man who's face is naturally framed by his own hands in a triangular shape. A lot of Hedgecoes work was in black and white and was also done in film. This photo was taken with light coming from above to frame the mans face and body shape. It  was placed perfectly to bring in focus on his head and less on his hands. I really like the look of this photo, its just so plain and looks so simple to re create, but at the same time every detail had to be perfect to come out with a photo like this so i imagine it would be difficult to master the skills it took to create it.

FIRST ANALYSIS

                                                                          Vee Speers
This photographer is called Vee Speers, she likes to take photos that are different and edit in images that change how the whole photograph looks. Alot of her photos are just people placed in photos that describe different situations.
This photo was taken from a series of photos called 'Thirteen' which were taken during her daughters 13th year to resemble purity and the growing pains of her teenager. Speers was trying to show her daughters transition from girl to woman.

Factual
This is a photo of her daughter against a pale background holding two black birds. She is wearing white and looks very pale.

Context
This collection is about the transition from child to adult, it tries to represent the difficulties and the nice things about change. All of the photos in this collection 'thirteen' are pale with amounts of contrast. I think this is trying to show that even the purist things are inviting to dark things (the ravens)

Technical
I think this photo was created by very simply placing her daughter in front of a pale background, and considering her daughters and the children she uses in her photos are very photogenic she just photos them using high brightness levels. Some of her photos are then later edited to make the photo more pale and to add in certain aspects that make the photo more interesting to look at.

Aesthetic
I love the look of all of 'thirteen' and another one of Vee Speers' collection 'the birthday party' because they all beautifully merge into the same pattern, but at the same time are all unique. They all have a certain story behind them but still give you space to interpret what is actually going on. All of them are pale and bright, representing purity and youth amazingly. They all seem so innocent and I think she has perfected her own style.
